Who Writes This Site

This site is written by one person: a solar O&M manager with eight years in the field. Not a training company, not a course vendor, and not affiliated with any certifying body.

Eight years of O&M is eight years spent on systems somebody else built. You inherit the array, the drawings, the commissioning records and whatever the last contractor did or did not write down, and then you are expected to keep it producing. That is a different job from installing, and it turns out to be a different exam.

That perspective is the only reason this site exists. The published Job Task Analysis tells you what the OMAT exam covers. It cannot tell you what those knowledge items look like at seven in the morning on a roof where the string that matters is the one nobody documented. The questions here are written from the second position.

How Our Questions Are Written

The process is worth stating plainly, because most free practice material does not say where it came from.

1. A human chooses the exam point. Every question is mapped to a specific item in the published NABCEP OMAT Job Task Analysis, and the scenario is built around what that item means in service work.
2. A human decides what each wrong answer should catch. A useful wrong answer is not a filler option — it is a mistake an experienced technician could actually make. Several of the distractors on this site are reasoning that is half right, which is what makes them hard to eliminate.
3. Drafts are written with AI assistance. We are not going to pretend otherwise.
4. A human reviews and edits every question before it is published. Nothing is published unreviewed. Each question was also answered in a browser, the way you will answer it, before it went live.

Every question has to pass five checks:

• It maps to a real JTA item.
• Its wrong answers catch a specific misconception, not a vague one.
• The explanation teaches why each option is wrong, not just which one is right.
• The standard the correct answer rests on is one the JTA actually names. The OMAT JTA names OSHA, NFPA, ANSI, IEEE, UL, NEMA and NRTL. It does not mention the NEC or any IEC standard, so those appear here only as background in an explanation, clearly labelled, and never as the basis of a correct answer. Questions built on clauses the exam does not test look authoritative and teach you the wrong thing.
• Would this question make just as much sense in a PV Associate question bank? If yes, it gets rewritten. Most of the OMAT knowledge items also appear in the PV Associate JTA, so what makes a question an O&M question is never the topic — it is whether it asks you to assess a system that already exists and has a history.

One more rule, which costs us more than it sounds like: if we cannot source a number to a primary document, we do not state it. Some figures live inside standards you have to pay for, and on some points the secondary sources contradict each other. Where that happens you will find the question written without the number, and an explanation saying why it is missing. A vague honest answer is worth more to you than a precise invented one.

There isn't one.

Every practice question on this site is original. None of them are actual exam questions, and nobody here has seen the exam bank. Where this site states a fact about the certification — the domain weightings, the exam format, the fees, the recertification cycle — it comes from NABCEP's own published documents, and the page says which one.
